Embracing my inner stylist

After recently modelling in a local student magazine in Sunderland I joined the DN magazine team. Doing fashion journalism I need as much practise as possible to improve my writing skills. I was appointed a features writer but was later asked if I wanted to help at fashion shoots and I am now fashion editor. Which I am thrilled about!

For the most recent issue of DN magazine, I had the job of finding a model and coming on set to help style it. We were on a short time scale and I had to find a model within an hour, luckily I knew a few ladies who would love to be part of this. After 20 minutes I managed to find the perfect girl.

The shoot was located at a vintage store in Seaburn in the North East and it was beautiful, the clothes, the layout of the store I was in love. Even though there was a rush to find 6 outfits in a short amount of time I found it relatively easy and it made me realise even more that that is what I want to do for a career. I love styling.

Here is the end result of the photoshoot, photos brilliant taken and edited by Lee Williams, and a short bit of writing I did along with it.

Walking into Corner 93 you think you have stepped back in time. It is a pre-loved clothing boutique, based in Seaburn. They only buy and sell designer, best on the British High Street and Vintage treasures from old troves.
Once you enter you will understand why they call the clothes treasures. I loved the clothes that much I had to purchase a fur coat. “We truly do love our fashion and have a passion for seeing clothes being re-loved.” This is their statement which you have to admire.

You can have a gander at the full magazine by following this link:http://issuu.com/degreesnorth/docs/dnmagazineissue53
Hope you enjoy it!

Farewell Christmas and 2012....

I do apologise for the lack of posts I have been an extremely busy bee with my university work and Christmas was creeping around too fast, there were far too many presents that had to be bought. But now it's over I am going to get back into the swing of writing a weekly post.

The months and months of hype over Christmas and within a day it is all over, this day seems to come and go within the blink of an eye as well!
One of the best days for fashion comes just after Christmas and we all know what that is...Boxing day aka Sales day. I imagine many of you have been rummaging through the vast amounts of garments to try and find the best deals but what you need to think about is what to buy to make sure you're bang on trend for next season!

One thing you need to avoid buying is military coats, every Autumn/Winter season we see them and that is the military look but try and avoid them. For Spring 2013 coats are about being sleek and chic, think traditional trench coats in clean colours as seen at Ferragamo.

Another style that you should avoid (I am extremely happy about this) is peplums. This style has been overused and although the peplum was fun and flouncy while it lasted (Lanvin left) the pencil skirt is back in town, for spring. If possible look out for colour block panels, as seen at Hermès (right) for a contemporary take on the ladylike classic.

Of course with Spring peeping around the corner as well, florals again are blossoming on the scene but for this season it seems fiery neon colours are making an appearance.
It as all about prints and colour for this Spring!

Take Louis Vuitton's collection (left), bringing back 60s fashion with the bright, bold checkered fabrics and Marc Jacobs (right) using geometric lines in his own show. With these there will be no shortage of interesting prints and patterns you can mix together to create some attention-grabbing outfits!

So have fun shopping everyone and remember to be wise with your buys!

DIY Galaxy

Even though some may not confess it, we are all secret space geeks. I, admittedly more than others.

Earlier this year there was a big obsession with galaxy garments, it was popularised by  Chistopher Kane's Resort 2011, and even though it is very much old news but I still very much enjoy all things galaxy, prints and all. Although his collection is a little bit out of price range, with dress and tops starting from £200. I would never spend so much on an item, luckily I was feeling quite crafty this summer and wanted to have a go at making this Galaxy pattern.
The idea came by accident when I stumbled across some of my washing, when I noticed a black top I had in the wash had an orange splatter on it. This was bleach. I wanted to investigate this further and stumbling across other blogs I found out how to create the Galaxy look on a top.
This one I particularly like;
Vintage Virgin
http://msvintagevirgin.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2011-08-07T07%3A30%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=3

It was very simple to do, all you need is a black top (mine was a bargain at £2.50 from Primark) and a spray bottle filled with a little splash of bleach and warm water. Then just experiment with the spray all over the top.
I would suggest practising first as you can get different effects depending on how hard/fast/close/ferociously you spray and before your eyes will develop a beautiful galaxy all of your own. Tada!
This is how mine turned out and I have to say I am pretty happy with the result, try it out yourself. Happy Bleaching!

Greetings!

Welcome to the wonderful world of The Ginger Moggy, this blog is going to a collection of lifestyle entries as well as post about that craze that a lot of people, including myself, are going gaga for: DIY Fashion.
After discovering it earlier this year, whenever I get a moment I try and amend old clothing into something new and create new patterns and designs on garments. This is what I want to share with you.
Fashion is a big part of my life. Studying Fashion Journalism has been a dream of mine and now I am finally doing it at University it is amazing, you learn so much. Not just about writing and journalism but about fashion and the history of it.
This is a way to share what I have learnt and discover new fashion. I will update this as frequently as I can while I get in the swing of now writing a blog!

Enjoy reading x
